I know that many of you are curious what the hell it means when I tell you that I work in real estate developement/venture capital management/foreign direct investment/private equity real estate/whatever other catch phrases i may have used.
Well, that is a hard question to answer and frankly, not great blog material. So instead, in response to your requests, here are some pictures of one of the most fun few hours I have spent while "at work" since I arrived in India.
Construction sites in India are surprisingly low tech. example? well for one thing, instead of cement mixers, there are generally guys mixing cement by hand. instead of concrete pumps, there are generally women in traditional garb carrying buckets of cement on their heads. (note the hard hats have rings to support the buckets built in. amazing right?!)
Generally the equipment that does show up on site is way, way, WAY cooler looking than the Western counterpart.
Generally signs are just really helpful.
Stop and ty to understand what that signs wants to be saying. Either its "want a safe working environment? well shut the hell up and stop complaining." or its saying "What? A safe working environment. How? well we know for sure that its not just a matter of the proper personal protective equipment, but beyond that its pretty much up to you to figure out."
Either way, its important to note that no one but no one who is doing any actual manual labor on this site speaks anything but Telugu. But ya, I mean if they did speak English I think this sign would successfully confuse them enough to decide wholeheartedly to disregard their personal safety.
Also there are, without fail, lots and lots of people hanging around. Often times you find that any particular job will require 5 to 15 men to stand around in a circle, lean on some shovels and just watch while a woman does the actual task at hand.
OK. here is the icing on the cake. drum roll please:
My life, ladies and gentlemen.

Dilli Dally
Sarah and I had a good laugh over this one.
This is a lingerie store close to my apartment called "The Taste."
Apparently they also sell a certain tasty bird? I am open to suggestions as to what else that sign on the door could POSSIBLY mean.
Post your best guess and I will go in and try to get to the bottom of this mystery. Whoever guesses right gets a prize.
